COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sept. 7, 2010 – In observance of Hunger Action Month (H.A.M.), Colorado College’s Community Kitchen and Care and Share, with help from CC’s Carnivore Club, are hosting H.A.M. JAM from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26 to help raise awareness about hunger in America.
H.A.M. JAM, featuring lots of music, food and an open mic, will be held at Autrey Field on the east side of Nevada Avenue, across from Shove Memorial Chapel, 1010 N. Nevada Ave. This opportunity to “rock out against hunger” is free and open to the public.
The event not only provides the opportunity to learn about hunger in Southern Colorado and what can be done to help alleviate it, but also celebrates the reopening of CC’s Community Kitchen after its recent renovation. The Community Kitchen, which prepares and serves a free meal every Sunday for the hungry and homeless of Colorado Springs, is one of the oldest student-operated community kitchens in the country.
Colorado College’s Carnivore Club will grill hamburgers, brats and veggie burgers; guests are asked to bring a salad or side dish to share. To celebrate the 18 years of collaboration between community members and CC students, cake and ice cream also will be provided.
The CC Community Kitchen, located in the basement of Shove Memorial Chapel, was renovated during the summer. Improvements include removing the upper cabinets and installing stainless steel shelving; moving the dishwashing operation out of the kitchen into a side hallway and installing a rinse station, stainless steel countertops and backsplash; slip-resistant flooring in the dishwashing and kitchen areas; and the installation of two new freezers and two refrigerators, a commercial microwave, two commercial food disposals, commercial faucets, a warming oven and an under-the-counter commercial dishwasher. The Community Kitchen also has a new paint job and new trays, plastic glasses, coffee cups and bowls.
